URC Daily Devotion: 3rd May

James 1: 9-11

Let the believer who is lowly boast in being raised up, and the rich in being brought low, because the rich will disappear like a flower in the field. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the field; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. It is the same with the rich; in the midst of a busy life, they will wither away.

What about this business of boasting? We’ve all been been brought up not to boast. But this is a different kind of boasting – we’re not boasting about what we’ve achieved, but about what has been achieved in us. The lowly have been raised to dignity. The rich have been lowered to humility. All have been altered – to their greater potency and effectiveness in witness to the Gospel, and to their greater contribution to the fellowship of their Christian community. But it’s maybe the rich who have benefited most.

The Holy Spirit does not let us down.

Who am I, Lord?
Am I humble? Am I arrogant?
Am I lowly? Am I rich?
Teach me, Lord, who I am,
what I am, and what I must become.
What am I, Lord?
Am I humble? Am I arrogant?
Am I lowly? Am I rich?
Enable me, Holy Spirit,
to realise who I am,
and empower me to become what I must become.
And lead me in the way I must walk
in my new self-awareness.  Amen
